youtube embed not working?

  • Hey, there 0 anyone else getting this problem? My youtube embeds posted *after* about 5 pm yesterday (and still today) are not working; they show up as a white block on my blog here: http://aardvarkproductions5.wordpress.com/demo-reels/cbc

Any ideas? This is the same problem whether I use firefox or safari on my mac, or if I switch to my clunker pc and use IE8…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Yep. Same problem. I’ve tried a number of different video with no success.

  • I think I have a solution:

Use shortcode instead of the long code that youtube provides:

    ie:

    [youtube=url]
*** in this case, substitute url with whatever url your youtube video lives on. I tried this today and it worked in every case, I redid my whole website using this shortcode. Not sure where the problem was in the first place but this seemed to work.

  • Hi shortweird,
I have been having the same problem. I ended up doing the post with a link to the youtube site. I’m not computer savvy at all and don’t know what you mean by the “shortcode.” But like armysoldier I have tried everything and still no go.

  • Having the exact same problem.

  • If you view wordpress through Chrome or Firefox, youtube viddys are just fine, IE8 for some reason has an issue with youtube.

View your blog through anything not IE and you should be good to go.

  • When I say IE8 has an issue with youtube, I should have been more specific. IE8 seems to have an issue with youtube embeds in wordpress.

But you knew I meant that, right?

  • Same problem on both IE 8 and FireFox

I post on my wordpress Pronk Palisades blog the problem as well

Memo To WordPress Support: Suddenly Three Recent Blog Posts With Embedded YouTube Videos Are Not Displaying Or Loading Videos

It is not a browser or YouTube issue.

    Old blog posts work fine.

However, I added a new video to an old blog post and the new embedded YouTube video did not display.

Space is left for the YouTube image.

Please fix as soon as possible.

    It is driving me nuts

    Thanks

  • wait… shortwierd, you said you have issues with the viddys in Firefox too? Hmm…. I’m using version 3.6.8 for windows… curious.

  • I had issues with every browser at my disposal; Mozilla on 2 different macs (different versions) and Safari on 2 different macs (different versions) as well as Mozilla and IE8 on my PC.

Simply put, video put into my blog from youtube before about 5 pm on Wednesday night worked fine, and anything else just showed a white box in my blog.

So, let’s say I was trying to link to this page here:

    If I used the embed code provided by youtube (the long code) that you cut and paste: <object width=”480″ height=”385″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/XaVtHSZyd3Q?fs=1&hl=en_US”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/XaVtHSZyd3Q?fs=1&hl=en_US” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”480″ height=”385″></embed></object>

    — all I got was that white box.

BUT after 2 days of being frustrated I stumbled upon the short code from wordpress, which is far simpler and according to the people who use it, never fails:

The page that video is on is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaVtHSZyd3Q

    So, the *shortcode* is this:

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaVtHSZyd3Q]

in other words the code is: [youtube=URL] where the URL part is whatever youtube video you want to embed in your blog.

Hope that’s more clear to everyone :-)

  • This just happened to me–YouTube embeds working fine, then not. It wasn’t even an overnight thing. One minute they…well, it (I only had one) was working, then it quit.

I was working on (and have been the last couple of days) WordPress/bbPress integration and synchronization; however, I’d already done the changes to the respective config files and the embed was still working.

It may have happened when I edited the old post, which was then synced to the forum with the “WordPress-bbPress syncronization” plugin. I had just made a change to the URL for my bbPress location (dropped the “http://www.” as suggested in a support thread–it worked) from within WordPress.

Could that have been the trigger? If so, what would it have changed to affect the embed feature?

I appreciate the shortcode fix, but there are some features, namely resizing the video, that I’ll miss (unless you can do that with the shortcode?).

    Thanks.

(PS. Just checked, and they’re working in IE 8)

  • Thanks, panaghiotisadam. I really appreciate the help. – Jeff

  • Not sure if this is helpful or useful, but it’s info related to this problem, so I thought I’d share.

On my work laptop, which runs Windows XP, YouTube embeds don’t work when I use Firefox 3.6.9, but they do show up when I use IE8. At home I’m a Mac-guy, and I can see the embeds on Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

The weird thing is that they did work at work with Firefox yesterday morning, and then “poof“, they didn’t. I didn’t restart Firefox, didn’t add, delete or alter any extensions I’ve got running. The only thing I did was tweak some settings related to my WordPress/bbPress integration/synchronization.

Since then, I’ve cleared the cache using CCleaner, so I don’t think it’s a cookie issue. Still no YouTube with Firefox.

Anyway, I think the shortcode workaround will fix things for me, but, again, wanted to share the whole problem in case it helps someone find the reason this happens. I know I’m curious.

  • That’s interesting. Very interesting.

I always, always, always recommend the shortcode. Whenever staff is tinkering YouTubes go all wonky, and the only thing that has worked for four straight years, never once failing, is the shortcode.
